Where things currently stand
- Mounjaro — FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes (May 2022).
- Zepbound — FDA-approved for chronic weight management (November 2023) and for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity (December 2024) — the first and only FDA-approved medicine for that indication.
- SURMOUNT-1 (NEJM, 2022) — pivotal obesity trial; 15 mg produced average weight loss of about 22.5% at 72 weeks.
- SURMOUNT-OSA — sleep apnea trial supporting the Zepbound OSA approval; reduced breathing disruptions by 25–29 events/hour vs. 5–6 with placebo.
- SURPASS-CVOT (NEJM, published December 2025) — tirzepatide was noninferior to dulaglutide on major cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with an approximately 8% relative reduction in three-point MACE and 16% reduction in all-cause mortality vs. dulaglutide.
